Georgia Institute of Technology
Atlanta, GA 30332

The Center for Applied Probability at Georgia Tech will hold a Special Topic Two-Day Workshop focusing on decision processes, entitled New Directions in Decision Processes, on February 23 & 24, 1996. The emphasis of the Workshop will be to present new areas of application and theory involved with decision-making problems in probability and related fields. The Workshop is centered around four main speakers, with one speaker for each of four areas of decision process applications.

Summary of Workshop Schedule

Friday, February 23, 1996

Registration will take place between 8:30 and 9:00 a.m. near Room 205, Instructional Center, located next to the Industrial and Systems Engineering Building on the Georgia Tech Campus.

All Workshop lectures and discussions on Friday and Saturday are scheduled to take place in Room 205 of the Instructional Center. The Workshop will begin at 9:05 a.m. Professor William D. Sudderth (School of Statistics, University of Minnesota at Minneapolis)will speak on gambling and stochastic games, between 9:15 a.m. and 12:15 p.m. Professor Stanley R. Pliska (Department of Finance, University of Illinois at Chicago) will speak on mathematical finance, between 1:45 and 4:45 p.m.

A buffet/reception is being planned for Workshop attendees from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Alumni House on the Georgia Tech Campus.

Saturday, February 24, 1996

The Workshop will reconvene at 9:05 a.m. Saturday morning in Room 205.

Professor David O. Siegmund (Department of Statistics, Stanford University) will speak on "Change-point Problems and Applications," between 9:15 a.m. and 12:15 p.m. Professor P.R. Kumar (Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Coordinated Science Laboratory, University of Illinois at Urbana) will speak on "New Directions in Scheduling Manufacturing Systems: Performance Analysis and Design," between 1:45 and 4:45 p.m.

The Workshop is scheduled to close at 5:15 p.m.

General

The speaker for each area will give two one-hour talks, with the two hours containing some background, having some breadth, mentioning some important recent results and techniques in thearea, and giving some good open problems in the area. There is also time set aside for discussion during each of the morning and afternoon sessions. Although much of the talks should not require too much background, each of the speakers has prepared a reading list with both some general and specific readings in the area related to their talk, for those who may wish to preview the areas of application before the talks.

Housing Accommodations

For the dates of our Workshop, major conventions in Atlanta have gobbled up a very large number of hotel rooms in the area.

The Workshop organizers have made special arrangements with the Castlegate Hotel, located at Interstate 75 & Howell Mill Road N.W., Atlanta, GA 30318 (Telephone/Fax (404) 351-6100).Attendees to the Workshop can reserve a room at the rate of $52.00/night. There are a limited number of these rooms available, and the reservation should be made before January 22, 1996. Attendees should make their own reservations, and state that they are attending the Georgia Tech Decision Process Workshop to obtain this rate. (Ask for a rate confirmation). If you arrive in Atlanta by airplane, you will have to take a taxi or limousine service to the Castlegate. In particular, the Castlegate is not easily accessed via public transportation.

There may be other hotel rooms available in the immediate area because of cancellations. If you want to try other hotels, here is a short list of a few in the proximity of Georgia Tech, with their rates as of this fall.

Travel Discounts

Delta Air Lines offers special fares to attendees of Georgia Tech programs. Certain restrictions may apply. For information and reservations, call 1-800-241-6760 and refer to file U0175. Also, several of the carriers have just announced discounts in theirflights between now and the end of February.

Directions to Workshop

By car, entering Atlanta from I-20 or while travelling north on I-75 or I-85:
I-75 and I-85 merge in Atlanta to form I-75/85. (If you are on I-20, go north on I-75/85 in the center of Atlanta.) Exit the expressway at Exit 100 which is the Spring St. and West Peachtree St. exit. Turn left at the second light onto West Peachtree St. Turn left at the first light onto North Ave.. Travel west on North Avenue and follow the signs to the "Center for the Arts". (These signs will ask you to turnright onto Tech Parkway which is the second traffic light along the GT campus, then turn right at the first light, and then immediately turn right onto Ferst Drive.) Now go to the parking directions section below.

By car, entering Atlanta while travelling south on I-75 or I-85:
I-75 and I-85 merge in Atlanta to form I-75/85. Exit the expressway at Exit 100 which is the North Ave. exit. Turn right at the top of the ramp onto North Ave.. Travel west on North Avenue and follow the signs to the "Center for the Arts." (These signs will ask you to turn right onto Tech Parkway which is the secondtraffic light along the GT campus, then turn right at the first light, and then immediately turn right onto Ferst Drive.) Now go to the parking directions section below.

By MARTA:
Take the North-South Marta train ($1.50) to the North Avenue exit. The station is on the northeast corner of West Peachtree and North Ave. Walk west along North Ave. past the Varsity and over the expressway. After the football stadium take the steps up and enter the campus. Walk diagonally across the campus and ask some students where the Instructional Center for Management and Industrial Systems & Engineering is located. You will probably have to walk through the Student Center due to construction for the Olympics. The talks are in Room205 of the Instructional Center.

Parking: There are 2 options:
For the brave of heart: As you turn onto Ferst Street, turn left into the 2nd driveway on the left just past the parking structure. The Instructional Center Building is "up the hill" from the parkingstructure, between the parking structure and the Student Athletic Complex. The talks will be in Room 205 of the Instructional Center. Park in any legitimate parking spot even if you don't have an A05 sticker. You may get a parking ticket. Rumor has it that if you are NOT from Georgia Tech, you can write visitor on the ticket along with the reason for your visit to campus and the ticket will be voided. Lorraine Shaw might be able to help you with this.

For the faint of heart: As you turn onto Ferst Street, immediately turn left into the first driveway and follow the signs to the visitor parking area. I think there is a fee of $4. The Instructional Center is one of a grouping of three buildings next to this parking lot. Thetalks are in Room 205.
