Positive feedback is self-reinforcing in that the feedback causes the particles to aggregate, thereby increasing the feedback as well; negative feedback is self-leveling in that random perturbations are resisted, and the particles maintain a distance between themselves. In this model, the particles exert a force on each other that is inversely proportional to the distance of separation. The force is attractive when the feedback is positive, and it is repulsive when the feedback is negative; the magnitude of the feedback is related to the threshold force needed for directed motion. HOW TO USE IT ------------- The SETUP button creates the particles, distributes them randomly, and shows a color key. The GO button runs the simulation as described above. The NUMBER slider sets the number of particles to be created. The FEEDBACK slider determines the sign and magnitude of the feedback, as described above. THINGS TO NOTICE ---------------- For a certain number of particles, there is a minimum level of (positive) feedback required to achieve immediate clustering.
