The Trucking Industry Program (TIP), founded in April 1995 with the support of the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, contributes to the understanding of the trucking industry through a multi-disciplinary approach involving faculty and students from several U.S. universities, including the Georgia Institute of Technology, the University of Michigan, and Michigan State University. At present, twelve faculty and twelve graduate students are involved with TIP research.

The Trucking Industry Program is the only academic program in the United States engaged in comprehensive research on issues associated with labor, the firm, and the operations and technology in the trucking industry.

TIP goals and objectives are:

- To examine the impact of the trucking service industry on the nation’s economic competitiveness, while also considering safety, security, congestion, mobility, environmental impact, and energy efficiency.
- To examine the impact of regulation, technology, human resources, business strategy, and business systems on the efficiency of the industry.
- To explore the trucking service industry’s potential for providing high-quality, well-paying jobs and attracting a quality workforce.
- To involve students in research projects leading to Ph.D.s and to incorporate what we learn in the educational process.
- To build a permanent, nationally recognized center for research and education specializing in trucking service industry issues with the dual objectives of creating and disseminating new knowledge relevant to the trucking industry and educating future researchers and educators about the trucking industry.

The Trucking Industry Program web site was created to serve as the nerve center for future research on the trucking industry. It is designed to allow researchers and educators access to the latest publications concerning the industry, as well as allow for the establishment of a nationwide network of individuals interested in trucking.

To facilitate research on the trucking industry, individuals can access the TIP Data Center, which includes links to sources of useful information such as the Bureau of Labor Statistics and the Department of Commerce. In addition, TIP members will be able to access data sets to spur future research concerning the industry.

To help develop this web site, TIP members are encouraged to submit titles of books they have authored or edited, as well as research articles published on the trucking industry. In addition, TIP members are encouraged to share useful web site addresses, data sets, and updates regarding their current research (e.g., working papers).

Any submissions or suggestions concerning the TIP web site should be directed to Russ Ormiston at ormiston@msu.edu. This web site is currently a work in progress, so please be patient with its construction.
