2003 INFORMS Combined Colloquia

The 2003 INFORMS Combined Colloquia will be held October 17-18 in Atlanta, GA immediately preceding the INFORMS Annual Meeting. There are two colloquia - the Doctoral Colloquium and the Teaching Effectiveness Colloquium.

The Doctoral Colloquium is comprised of two distinct tracks (Academic and Industry) and is targeted toward Ph.D. students who are near graduation. Through presentations, panel discussions, and question-answer sessions, the colloquium covers important topics such as careers, trends and directions; research and publishing; obtaining grants and working in industry; and job search. The colloquium provides an excellent opportunity for interaction between doctoral students and some of the most successful people in Operations Research and Management Science. Some important takeaways from this colloquium include a good understanding of how to find a job that will enable you to achieve your career goals and how to build a successful career. While all Doctoral Colloquium participants will attend sessions on topics of common interest throughout the morning, there will be separate afternoon sessions for the academic and industry tracks, catering to students who plan to pursue careers in academia and industry, respectively. Many students who have attended similar colloquia in the past have found the experience to be extremely rewarding.

The fifth Teaching Effectiveness Colloquium is being organized by the INFORM-ED and INFORMS Education Committee and is designed to address the growing concern for the quality of both undergraduate and graduate level OR/MS instruction. This colloquium is targeted toward faculty and doctoral students who are interested in current trends in teaching in OR/MS. A series of sessions given by successful and effective teachers will be included in this colloquium, providing an opportunity for teachers at any stage of their professional development to pursue continuous improvement. Important takeaways from this colloquium include an understanding of what works best for teaching OR/MS to different students (undergraduate, graduate, M.B.A.); knowledge of available software for a variety of topics; how to use the web effectively; and strategies for achieving excellence in the classroom.

Participation in these colloquia is by nomination only. Please see the call for nominations (Doctoral or Teaching) for more details. A reception dinner will be held for all participants on Friday, October 17, 2003. Participants in both colloquia will have an opportunity to interact during this event as well as throughout breakfast, breaks, and lunch on Saturday, October 18. Additionally, a joint closing plenary session is planned on Saturday. There will be a separate dinner on Saturday, October 18, 2003 for participants in the two colloquia. For further information, please contact the Combined Colloquia Chair, Dr. Anuj Mehrotra (anuj@miami.edu) or visit the colloquia website.
