    Large-scale Optimization and Logistics

    • Mixed integer programming: polyhedral theory, algorithmic design and parallel implementation.
    • Decision support system for mass dispensing for pandemics and bioterror attacks.
    • Efficient models and algorithms for finance portfolio optimization.

    Bio/medical, Healthcare and Public Health Research

    • Machine learning and predictive models -- Pattern recognition and discriminant analysis approaches to health risk prediction, medical diagnosis, early detection, target intervention, monitoring and controlling of disease, and treatment outcome prediction.
    • Public health and medical preparedness -- decision analysis of strategic and operational planning for mass dispensing for pandemics, bioterror, and population health monitoring in radiogical attacks.
    • Large-scale cancer modeling and biocomputing intensity-modulated radiation therapy -- To produce IMRT treatment plans, sophisticated optimization methods must be used for designing the optimal beam geometry, fluence pattern and delivery parameters. This research explores novel optimization and biological models, and large-scale parallel algorithms for real-time clinically relevant plan design. Furthermore, issues related to organ motion and continuous tumor shrinkage are investigated.
    • Evolutionary models, DNA sequencing and genomic analysis -- Development of efficient mathematical models and robust algorithms for large-scale sequence analysis problems arising in computational genomics, protein structural analysis, and evolutionary biology.
    • Biological modeling and large-scale computing for multi-modality optimal cancer treatment design for permanent implants in radiation therapy -- Development of optimization models and expert online treatment planning system for determining optimal configuration for radioactive seed implants. One of the goals involves incorporating biologic tumor information into planning procedures (e.g., brachytherapy, IMRT) in the treatment of prostate carcinoma to improve local tumor control by emphasizing not only the clinical prescribed dose but also appropriate escalated dose within the prostate.
    • Brain Tumor Radiosurgery Treatment Planning -- Development of sophisticated models for deriving the clinical parameters for determining optimal treatment plans for brain tumor radiosurgery (i.e., high dose, high precision external beam radiation therapy). Clinical expert system encapsulates the optimization module to assist neurosurgeons in the treatment delivery room.
